ACMAD at COP 29

ACMAD will participate in COP29 as an Intergovernmental Organization, providing climate information and trend analysis over Africa to support African negotiators. As a leader in climate action, ACMAD remains committed to building strong partnerships that serve its member states in enhancing resilience to disasters and adapting to climate change. These efforts align with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, particularly under the theme “The Africa We Want.”

During COP29, ACMAD will lead one side event and co-organize several others with partners, highlighting the impacts of climate change across the African continent.

About COP 29

The 2024 Baku Conference on Climate Change, also known as COP29, is an international event organized by the United Nations. It will take place from November 11 to 22, 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan, a nation with an economy heavily reliant on oil and gas exports, similar to the United Arab Emirates, which hosted COP28 the previous year. COP29 marks the 29th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP), bringing together countries that are signatories to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Objectives

A central focus of COP29 will be climate finance, with trillions of dollars needed to help countries significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and safeguard lives and livelihoods from the worsening impacts of climate change. The conference will also be pivotal for nations to present updated National Determined Contribution plans under the Paris Agreement, due by early 2025. If these plans are executed effectively, they will limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels while advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Expected outcomes:

One of the major anticipated outcomes of the Baku negotiations is the establishment of a New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance, which will replace the current target of USD 100 billion per year. Mitigation, loss, and damage will also be key focal points of the conference, with significant attention on addressing the growing issue of loss and damage due to climate change.
