Strengthening Climate Action: ACMAD Leadership Engages with WMO
On February 19, 2025, Dr. Ousmane Ndiaye, Director General of the African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development (ACMAD), had the privilege of meeting with Prof. Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and Thomas Asare, WMO Assistant Secretary-General.
The discussions focused on ACMAD’s contributions to WMO’s climate action initiatives, including the WMO Coordination Mechanism (WCM) products, the Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative, and collaboration with the Africa Multi-Hazard Early Warning and Early Action System (AMHEWAS), among other strategic areas.
This engagement also provided an opportunity to strengthen ties with WMO experts and participate in the CREWS Steering Committee meeting, reinforcing a shared commitment to advancing early warning systems and climate services across Africa.
Prof. Celeste Saulo emphasized WMO’s reliance on expertise from its regional meteorological and climate networks. She highlighted the importance of reinforcing collective efforts to advance the Early Warnings for All initiative and build resilience and sustainable development in Africa.
“As climate change continues to impact communities worldwide, Africa remains particularly vulnerable, making reliable climate information services essential for adaptation, resilience, and sustainable development. As WMO’s designated Regional Climate Centre for Africa, ACMAD plays a pivotal role in supporting these efforts,” said Dr. Ousmane Ndiaye.
This meeting reaffirmed ACMAD’s commitment to contributing to WMO’s climate action agenda. We remain dedicated to working closely with WMO to achieve our common goal: a more resilient Africa where every individual is protected by effective early warning systems.
