World Wetlands Day 2025: Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future
On February 2nd, ACMAD marked World Wetlands Day, celebrated this year under the theme “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future.” A reminder of the critical role these ecosystems play in climate mitigation, adaptation, biodiversity & human health.
Wetlands offers a range of natural services that help communities and ecosystems cope with climate change.
Here are some key points outlining the critical role that play the wetlands in climate adaptation and mitigation:
- Flood Mitigation: Wetlands act like natural sponges by absorbing excess rainfall and reducing the severity of floods. This capacity is vital in preventing or lessening flood damage, especially as extreme weather events become more frequent due to climate change.
- Carbon Sequestration: Many wetlands, such as peatlands and mangroves, are effective carbon sinks. They store large amounts of carbon, helping to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and regulate global climate patterns.
- Biodiversity Preservation: Wetlands provide habitats for a wide array of plant and animal species. This biodiversity enhances ecosystem resilience, ensuring that natural systems can better withstand and adapt to climatic shifts.
- Water Quality Improvement: By filtering pollutants and sediments from water, wetlands maintain cleaner water systems. This function is critical for sustaining both human populations and natural ecosystems, particularly in the context of increased water stress.
- Coastal Protection: In coastal regions, wetlands such as mangroves serve as buffers against storm surges and erosion. They protect inland areas from the impacts of rising sea levels and severe storms
Wetlands are indispensable in climate adaptation strategies because they not only mitigate some of the impacts of climate change but also bolster the resilience of both natural ecosystems and human communities. Let’s protect the wetlands for a prosperous future of humanity.
Note: The World Wetlands Day, marked every year on 2 February, is organized by the Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. The global campaign calls on governments, organizations and individuals to protect our planet’s wetlands.
