ABOUT ACCOF-19 :

The year 2024, like others, was marked by climate events, with severe droughts. North Africa, in particular, was affected by a drop in agricultural production of up to half. In Southern Africa, some countries in the region saw their cereal yields decrease by approximately 50%. Furthermore, other regions were affected by extreme rainfall, and floods affected millions of people, with 700,000 victims. In West and Central Africa, more than 4 million people were affected, highlighting the continent’s vulnerability to the impacts of climate variability and change.

ACCOF is the mechanism set up at ACMAD, to facilitate the implementation of the African RCOFs coordination function of the WMO designated RCCs for all Africa. The main objective of the Forum will be to evaluate the past climate season of December 2024 to May 2025 Season and analyse the current state of climate drivers and co-produce the seasonal outlook for the June, July, August and September season. In addition, the Consensus Statement on the Continental Outlook for Africa will be developed and published to raise awareness on the quality and benefits of an integrated and harmonized continental climate outlook for climate change adaptation in African Regional Economic Communities (RECs).

FORUM OBJECTIVES :

ACCOF-19 aims to co-produce a Consensus Continental Climate Outlook for June, July, August and September (JJAS) 2025 season and to enhance the contribution of RCCs to Early Warning and Anticipatory Action.  The specific objectives of the meeting are to:

  • Verify the performance/skills of the forecasts for December 2024 to April 2025 Season.
  • Analyse the current evolution of the main climate drivers including the ENSO evolution and their impacts at the continental level for the December 2024 to April 2025 period.
  • Develop a Consensus Continental Climate Outlook for JJAS 2025 season.
  • Support and Promote release of Impact/Risk Based Seasonal Climate Outlook Statements at Sub-Regional and Continental levels.
  • Create more awareness on benefits of integrated and harmonized Climate Outlook mechanism at Continental Level.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES :

The expected outcomes of the 19th African Continental Outlook Forum include:

  • Verified Performance/Skills of the Forecasts/Outlooks for December 2024 to April 2025
  • Prevailing Climate Drivers Analysed to inform the quality of forecast outlook to be produced for the June to September 2025 period.
  • Consensus Continental Climate Outlook Developed for JJAS 2025 season.
  • Enhanced Impact/Risk Based Seasonal Climate Outlook Statements for improved climate-smart decision making at Sub-Regional and Continental levels.
  • Capacity among Climate Experts built on Benefits of the integrated and harmonized Climate Outlook forecasting techniques at Continental Level.
